Located in Lisbon’s historic centre, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a national reference. Featuring the leading collection of Portuguese Art from the second half of the 19th century until today, it houses a collection of more than 5000 pieces, covering the wide field of painting, sculpture, design, photography and media, including the seminal works of the major movements of this period.

While the museum manifests its commitment in accomplishing the vital function of preserving, documenting and unfolding the most important national collection of art of the nineteenth century and modernism, it continuously questions contemporary art by monitoring production and by producing qualified, consistent and representative exhibitions, allowing the construction of a critical memory of national contemporary art.

Thus, the permanent exhibition is periodically renewed, according to historical and critical research made, which contributes to reevaluate and exploit some of the most paradigmatic works or artistic moments of Portuguese art.
